Here’s part 3 of Orchid’s Step On It. This ain’t no holiday.

I went out to the Mapleshade skatepark yesterday to meet Van and Slattery. When I pulled up I noticed that Van was wearing the same shirt as me. Bad news. Then I glanced at his shoes and much to our horror, they were also the same. We were also wearing the exact same socks and we both had on shorts. We scrambled to see if we had a change of clothes but no luck. All we could do was take it and look fruity all day.
Don’t let this happen to you! Fashion Tip #23: Call ahead and coordinate outfits. It sounds a little metrosexual but look at the alternative. Just look at it!!!

Here’s a peek at Kevin Porter’s new Orchid pro model. The shoe will be out sometime in July 2007. It’s vegan friendly, synthetic and canvas. This colorway is called coffee/caramel, a nod to Kevin’s day job at the coffee shop. My favorite part about this shoe is the screen printed side panels. Fancy.
We’ll be previewing a new shoe every week until July so check back soon.

On Saturday a few guys from Woodward came down to ride the ramp and trails. Woodward will teach you strange moves. Here Andy Alvarez does an x-up handplant. Wild.

After that I went out to Adam Aloise’s trails for a party. They’re in a big field behind his house and resemble a little slice of California in Pennsylvania. A bunch of riders were going crazy. Here Pat Laughlin cranks the biggest flip he can. Seriously, look how high that is! Lumpy doesn’t hold back. I also got a bunch of video footage from Adam’s trails so check back soon for that.

Bmx is happening right now. Here’s a couple more photos sent in from the team guys.

Corey Martinez, icepick. That spot looks like fun. Talem C. Photo.

Here’s part 2 of Orchid’s Step On It. This is the Utah section filmed in Matt Beringer’s backyard, the Layton concrete park, and some local street spots. It’s my personal favorite section in the video. Good times and good riding.
Also, check back soon because we’re going to do a contest on orchidfootwear.com where you can win Step On It DVD’s. We used a lot of film in the video so the quality is a million times better on a TV.
The team guys have been sending over some recent riding photos. Hopefully they’ll inspire you to get away from the computer and go pedal.

Here’s Van Homan yesterday morning at FDR. Looks like he opened up a new line. Pocket air.

Geoff Slattery blasting at Mapleshade. This photo is awesome but Van forgot who shot it. (E-mail him again and we’ll give you credit)

Last week I asked our team riders to contribute to the website. Orchid rider Kevin Porter was the first to come through with a legit article. Kevin is the type of guy who loves to help people. For example, if he comes to your trails he’ll help you dig instead of just riding. That’s what BMX is all about kids. Here Kevin decided to help his friend Sergio Layos get some coverage for his photography. You should already know Sergio for his riding. He’s one of those bad ass guys from Spain. Read on…
“Hey guys, I have decided to start a new thing on the site. I am going to start a project called ‘Photographer of the Month’ which I will do my best to keep up, there is no telling how much of a slack job I can be…This is to help support some of the most amazing photographers in the world of BMX. One word to the readers I may be a little biased because I have my favorites.” -Kevin.

This month I bring you:
Sergio Layos
What do you have to say for yourself?
Be happy you are just 21.
How long have you been taking photos?
Five or six years now.
Where is the craziest place you have ever taken a photo?
South Africa, in the most poor area of Johannesburg.
What was it like being there?
Crazy sketchy!!!
What is it like having your photo shown all over the BMX world?
I guess its good, it makes me really happy. To be able to show the world the point of view that I have. Also that people appreciate it enough to put it in a magazine or on the web makes me know that I am doing something different and right.
Is that better or worse than having a photo of yourself all over the BMX world?
It makes me happy to have a picture of myself, because it is something I have never seen before. It will always surprise me because I never know when it will show up. Seeing a photo of myself makes me happy knowing I did something good enough riding my bike to be in a magazine.
Look for Sergio’s photos often on:

Photo: Mr. Lif (left) and Akrobatik (right) rockin the mic at JB’s.
Me and a few friends went to see the Perceptionists play last week. It was a rad show and my ears are still ringing. Not only from the show but from Bob Myers yelling in my ear, “This is freakin ILL!!!!” Bob was so amped that he even came through with a show review. That’s whats up. Take it away Bob:
Hip hop in Philly is very alive and very well, and we’ve been getting a healthy dose of it lately. Last year in Philly one of our local bars “Johnny Brenda’s” turned its 2nd and 3rd floor into a 250 person live music venue. It was only last weekend that they had there first hip hop show, ’bout time. I must say it was one of the best hip hop shows in recent memory. The line up was Mr. Lif (it was his first gig since he moved into town), Akrobatik, both of them together as the Perceptionists, Hezekiah, Reef the Lost Cauze and Dave Ghetto. They all rotated on stage passing the mic back and forth and keep the party rockin well into the night, everybody’s head was movin. The sound at JB’s was amazing (they had musicians help them build the venue) I love a hip hop show when you could hear what there saying, nah mean. At the end of the night they even had a freestyle session that was unreal. If any of these guys are in your area and your a hip hop fan check em, you wont be let down. In the meantime feed your head with these myspace links:

Maybe not quite an internet premiere, since there’s been a pirated copy on Google Video forever. But we’re trying to do something a little different with it. We’re going to release a part from the video each week until the entire thing is up. I figured the video is 2 years old and we’re almost out of DVD’s so why not.
So here you have it, the intro to Orchid’s Step On It, part 1 of a weekly series. Enjoy.
