Interview: Matt Beringer

Matt Beringer just may be the coolest guy in bmx. I know I may be biased but I don’t know anyone who’s met him that would dispute that fact. I thought it was a good time to catch up with Matt and ask him a few questions.
Your LDTV video has been insanely popular. You’re up to 32,000 views in only a couple of weeks. Does that get you pumped?
Yeah, I hope it makes people want to build stuff.
I heard your parents saw it and didn’t appreciate the song very much. Are they pissed?
My parents saw it with no sound and they were psyched on it. My sister saw it and told my mom that the song was kind of bad. My mom asked my sister what the song was and she told her she couldn’t say. I just told them that I didn’t pick the song so they’re just pissed at you. Just kidding, my parents are cool but I never swear around them.
What’s your motivation to keep expanding your backyard playground?
It’s great to have a place to build jumps and ramps where you don’t have to worry about someone tearing the stuff down. It’s gone this far, why not keep it going?
Everyone wants to know more about the water slide. Tell us something about it that we don’t already know.
The slide was first built in 1977, the year I was born.
You’ve been updating the S&M site lately and working your way into an S&M team manager position. Is responsibility creeping up on you?
It’s good, I need to be more responsible. You definitely can’t make a living riding your bike forever.
Do you think the S&M team is even manageable? That’s a pretty wild cast of characters. What’s your game plan?
I think that everyone on the team is pretty interesting. My plan is to help organize web stuff and set up trips to film for a new video. Chris said he wants a video done by Interbike 08, I think we can do it.
Speaking of responsibility, when is the last time you had a real job?
My last real hourly job was Binghams bike shop, I quit in July of 1997.
How old are you now and how many years have you been a sponsored pro?
I’m 30 and I have been pro since 1998.
How’s the snow bike business coming along? Are you really going to make that happen?
Look up ski bikes on the internet, you’ll probably be able to find some real kooked stuff. This year will be my 4th year riding up at the resort, I feel like it’s been a lot of trial and error. I know what setup works and I know how cool it would be to have anodized brackets and graphic skis. I just don’t know how to start a business and it takes money to make money.
You know I’m coming out there to film a snow bike video part this winter. Are you prepared to shred the gnar?
I am prepared to shred the gnar. Last year I had a season pass, this year I need to find someone to make me a fake student ID or something so I can get a pass cheaper. (passes are $800!)
What else have you been up to lately?
I ripped out the carpet in one of the rooms down stairs and moved my machine shop in there. I’ve been making hub guards and cog guards. The weather will be bad soon so chain tensioners and ski bike brackets are on the agenda. My friend Jeff just moved into my house also, he moved from Jackson Hole Wyoming. Everyone around here has been trying to get in their last clips for the 5050 video also, it’s going to premiere at the old Tower theatre on Nov. 20 in SLC. Oh yeah, Me, Mike Aitken, and Cameron Wood are in Cali for a week. I’m sure we’ll make it big time in Hollywood.
Thank the people who support you here.
S&M, Odyssey, Orchid, Little Devil, Ogio bags, 50/50 bike shop, my parents and my friends………I love you all.
